A sensible middle ground is to keep debian on your produciton machines
and run grml (or whatever distro catches your fancy) on your
"toolbox"-machines. Then, as you go along and learn the toolsets of grml
(or whatever), you will almost always be able to find a package for
debian with that tool. In essence you can tweak your package-selection
in debian in any direction, be it grml-ish, SuSE-ish or whatever.

This is where I think the debian package system really shines, debian
will adapt to your way of working. You just need to know the names of
the apps/tools you need to get there.

Very sound advice. I really like the font change that grml does to the
console. It makes the text crisp and easy to read. One of my first
projects after tweaking this "new" system back to the way I have it is
to make a backup image of it, then see about merging some of the grml
utilities in.

Since gmrl is Debian, with a patched kernel, it should be pretty simple.
I also am studying some of the patches that lhs (from Sidux) is
applying to sid to keep it stable. The more I study things like that,
the more I learn about how the system ticks, and that is my main goal.

Stable is fine and dandy, but it doesn't teach me anything. It just
works. Of course there are hundreds of man pages I still haven't read...

I just love GNU/Linux!
