I have no experience with Courier, but I use Dovecot on Maildirs here with OpenLDAP for auth, talking to Squirrelmail and assorted IMAP(S) clients. Thus far, it Just Works(tm). As a data point, du -hs on the biggest Maildir is 4.7G.
