As for the issue at hand, how long does it take to reinstall? I suppose
that depends on how fast your internet connection is. The headers are
not small (ie:
pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-headers-2.6.18-4-486_2.6.18.dfsg.1-11_i386.deb
Size: 276494)

The whole process of getting rid of drivers installed with nvidia-installer and
installing them back from debian's packages (just to remind: had to build the
nvidia kernel module as I've been installing from 'experimental') took me
about 3 hours because of my crappy inet connection (don't ask how slow
it is...).
With fast inet connection I think it would take not more than 20 minutes
(including the time for reading the guide and such).

That was my point. Sometimes we with fast internet trivialize
installing packages. It takes me all of 6 seconds to grab the headers,
while my next-door neighbor takes an hour.

I honestly think that doing a clean install is faster than trying to
remove some things like that when only a slow internet is available (or
none at all). But then you have to spend all the time customizing it
again (unless you separate out some partitions and/or have backups you
can restore).

I suppose it all has to do with how much customizing one has done.
