Have you compiled the driver for your motherboard IDE/SATA controller
into the kernel. If its a module and no initrd then grub will not be
able to see the disks, let alone the partitions :)

Good point, I'll check. I think that should be OK though because it
picks up the kernel from /boot & changes to framebuffers on the
readout. It is only when it comes to mount / & start init it fails
