Gnome, and KDE are slow, and resource-hungry. Why not make something with
less bloat, like XFCE, as the default desktop environment in Debian?
Especially since nobody wants to spend money buying the most expensive
hardware.
Then again, XFCE continues to have memory leak issues. As for default,
there are different CDs that each have a different default DTE. OTOH,
you don't have to use _any_ DTE just to use X. OTOH, you don't have to
use X.
