Trouble configuring an Hp Officejet 6310 with Etch

Running Debian Etch. I've had this 6310 all in one Officejet working with Etch before but it doesn't work after I installed Etch on a different machine. The printer has been working fine with the previous Etch system and with Windows.

1. /usr/bin/hp-setup says:

(keith@jupiter) ~>sudo hp-setup

error: Unable to connect to hpiod.
error: Unable to connect to HPLIP I/O. Please (re)start HPLIP and try again.

I have executed sudo /etc/init.d/hplip restart on numerous occasions, powered the 6310 printer on and off, etc., still can't print or scan.

2. scanimage -L reports nothing to the terminal, but the following message appears in /var/log/messages:

Jun 29 09:43:58 jupiter scanimage: unable to connect hpssd socket 3203: Connection refused: prnt/hpijs/hplip_api.c 719

3. Desktop / Administration / Printing / New Printer detected the Officejet 6310, but the test page won't print due to an error. The gnome-cups-manager utility status window shows Stopped: job-stopped for the test page.

4. Detection messages from /var/log/message:

Jun 29 09:37:54 jupiter kernel: Vendor: HP Model: Officejet 6310 Rev: 1.00
Jun 29 09:37:54 jupiter kernel: Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02
Jun 29 09:37:54 jupiter kernel: sd 19:0:0:0: Attached scsi removable disk sda

5. Below is the output of dpkg -l \*hp\* if that will help:

(keith@jupiter) ~>dpkg -l \*hp\*

This printer has previously worked with Etch, as I said earlier.
