All of my HDD's are running nearly @ 49°C since years even with heavy
120mm cooling fans. My SATA WD Raptor are even hotter. arround 58°C.
My fivetyn WD800BB and eight Samsung SP802N are running since over 3
years without any problems between 48 and 60 ¬C, e.g. my FileServer:

/dev/hda: SAMSUNG SP0802N: 52°C
/dev/hdc: SAMSUNG SP0802N: 56°C
/dev/hde: WDC WD800BB-00JHA0: 50°C
/dev/hdg: WDC WD800BB-00JHA0: 48°C
----------------------------------------------------------------
You will get only 35-40°C if you do not use the Disks and they only
spining.
