Thanks for the exim4 smart host help. I would almost go with postfix except the smart host requires authentication but doesn't support any encryption for doing authentication on their end. It's probably what most internet service providers are now doing since ssl and cram md5 and tls are a hassle for them to set up and maintain on their ends.

sudo dpkg-reconfigure exim4-config
Adn this is waaaaaay less complex than anything else I've seen for
smarthost!
postfix is also easy to config using dpkg-reconfigure for smarthost.
Anyone who says that "sendmail less complex than ..." refuses to
learn new things.
