cannot submit datapipe for urb 0

Can anyone explain what this error message means?
"kernel: cannot submit datapipe for urb 0, error -38: enable
CONFIG_USB_EHCI_SPLIT_ISO to play through a hub"
I get this appear in the logs when I click the 'record' button in
Audacity which then freezes. I'm trying to record from a record deck
with a USB connector and I'm not using a USB hub.
