My /apt/sources.list file is as follows:

deb http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ etch main
deb-src http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ etch main
deb http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates main
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates main
deb http://download.webmin.com/download/repository sarge contrib
deb http://packages.dotdeb.org stable all
deb-src http://packages.dotdeb.org stable all

I am able to ping external websites using both ip and name, The
server

great that you can ping external websites, but can you ping the debian
servers? those are the ones that count here ;) Also there are some
funky characters and missing characters in your apt output above. Is
that transcription error? or something else?
