strange, every morning i run two aptitude commands from the command
line
aptitude update and aptitude full-upgrade
lately on running the full upgrade x crashes, well i shouldn't say
crashes, the system goes through its normal reboot (first time it left
me going huh), no error message in system log
version is aptitude 0.4.6.1
this occurs on both my etch and kubuntu 7.10 installs so i am fairly
sure it is not a distro problem
thanks in advance for any thoughts

From what I remember you're generally not supposed to run any sort of
updates while in an X environment; If I were you I'd quit X and change
to TTY1 before administering any changes (Especially if the changes are
X.org or libX related)
I've done this for years without problems - but I don't use Aptitude, I
use wajig.

Well, as I said it's from what I remember; When I used to use X I
updated from within X all of the time without any problems. I'd assume
that only certain hardware has problems, perhaps with certain upgrades
(Un-X related ones?)
