Re: aptitude crashing x?

Chris Bannister <mockingbird@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> writes:
"Important! You should _not_ upgrade using telnet, rlogin, rsh, or from
an X session managed by xdm, gdm or kdm etc on the machine you are
upgrading. That is because each of those services may well be terminated
during the upgrade which can result in an _inaccessible_ system that is
only half-upgraded."

There's also a chance that a meteor will fly into your computer,
rendering it inoperable. Doesn't happen in practice though...

When's then last time anybody _actually_ had a problem with this?
Is there _anyone_ (well anyone with a clue, anyway) who actually quits X
to upgrade their system (after all the typical debian user upgrades
several times a day ... :-)?

[The upgrade scripts in fact seem to be very careful about not hosing a
running X session -- e.g. if you upgrade gdm, it doesn't restart it,
rather it says "arranging for it to be restarted when you quit".]
