Weird gnome mount problem

Hi all,

I have a strange problem mounting a particular sd card. Actually, I'm
having trouble even figuring out what is wrong, let alon fixing it.

I'm running amd64 etch.

I have two SD cards that I use with my camera - one came with it, the
other is a SanDisk ultra II 1 GB card that I bought separately. I want
to read these with a generic USB card reader.

Under Gnome, the card that came with the camera works perfectly. It is
automounted when inserted into the card reader. The other card does not
automount, no devices are created and nothing is dumped into syslog when
it is inserted, though there is activity when the card is removed.

I have another card reader that has no problems with this card and it is
automounted fine.

OK. So far you'd say that the card reader is dodgy and live with it...,
but If I stop X and just work at the console then the card reader works
as expected! Devices are created and I can mount the card with either
pmount or mount.

So it must be some combination of stuff that Gnome runs and the card
reader, but I'm buggered if I know what to try or even where the bug
lies.

I've tried getting some output as suggested by
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingRemovableDevices
but the only result is nothing rather than an error.

Any theories, suggestions, tips, thoughts, or anything else that might
be useful?

cheers

dc
