Re: Debian + LVM + RAID1

I installed Debian on top of LVM and software RAID1 following this:
http://dev.jerryweb.org/raid/

Glad to know that document is still being used :)

Everything is fine except that I cannot boot the Debian afterwards
("Insert boot disk" message from the bios). I used /dev/sdc and
/dev/sdd. First problem is that I do not know which hdd I should
enter as the first boot device in the bios.

- From the sound of it I'd say the problem you are running into has little
to do with RAID, much less with LVM. It sounds as though you need to
figure out the right boot device order from the BIOS. As a test you
could always do a "plain" install (no RAID or LVM), you'll probably get
the same error. I'm a bit surprised that your primary hard disk is
/dev/sdc.. what are /dev/sda and /dev/sdb?

Moreover, obviously the bios does not see the /dev/md0 array, since
I guess first the raid array should be started in order for grub to
be loaded.

The BIOS does not need to see a RAID array, nor does grub: as far as
they are concerned they are just booting from a normal disk (your
/dev/sdc). Software RAID in Linux is implemented in such a way that you
can directly access one of the devices and it just works. BIOS/grub are
unaware of the fact that /dev/sdd contains the same information.

Cheers,
Jeremy
