OK. It all makes sense now.

Done. It was pulled in only because it is
recommended by pmutils. I don't need it.

Also done. Yes, the offending code was hiding
in the initrd.
Thanks for your help. I never would have
untangled this alone.
Still appears that the reference to "resume:"
at startup is erroneous. Couldn't it cite
"uswsusp:" rather than "resume:".
