Which kernel? With 2.6.32-5-685, X always locks up here? The mouse
freezes and all the keys are inactive so I have to do a hard reset. This
happens with both the nv and vesa drivers.

You should try nouveau or fbdev with that kernel. The 2.6.32-5-$ARCH
kernel autoloads nouveau.ko which provides kernel modesetting, and both
nv and vesa are not compatible with that.

I have nouveau and it works with 2.6.32-4-686. It doesn't work with
2.6.32-5-686; no screens are found.

You said that the freeze happens with nv and vesa, no mention of nouveau…
Anyway, please file a bug report. If the nouveau X driver works with
2.6.32-4-686 but not 2.6.32-5-686, linux-2.6 is the right package.

This is on my desktop. On my laptop, with radeon, nouveau works.

It surely does not because it's only for Nvidia hardware. Whatever
works with your Radeon card must be something else.
