& as it says, the forward & back buttons are missing. i found
this: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=835978 but installing
gnome-icon-theme didn't solve the problem.

Almost surely yes. This has also been reported in the Debian BTS
already: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=597694.

See the end of the bug log for a workaround that yours truly has
chosen.
