..you are using the ">" quote character where you should
use the "> " quote "character" (combination), this causes
real messy quote confusion with mail clients.

..in Claws Mail, menu bar option "Configuration" ->
"Preferences" -> left side bar option "Compose" ->
"Templates" -> middle tab option "Reply":
Find the "Quotation mark" text window, and add a
space character immediately after the ">". ;o)
