Ensure you have an updated system and if you are curious enough, there's
a litte program you can install ("kacpimon") to monitor the acpi events.
It will tell you what's going on when you press the power button.

Nothing seems to happen when I press power button
I install kacpimon, pressing power button or moving mouse can cause it
to print some msg

I'd better reinstall squeeze.
