Yes, this is true. And is a good way to create a form of confirming
valid email from spam.
Suppose you create a php script which would return you and image:
http://whatever/ConfirmAddressForSpam.php?email=your@email.com&messageCode=3
You would see correctly the image (and only the image), but the spammer
would also know that you read that email, it is valid and that you read
that specific message. I just don't like the idea.
And email in a mailing list is for us to learn and ask stuff, and not
for looking at animation.
I don't know how html emails got into message archives...
