Define the correct frequency ranges yourself manually, you may have to
google the specs on your display for the V&H refr.

eg /etc/X11/XF86Configi from my inspiron 1100:

    Section "Monitor"
            Identifier "Monitor0"
            VendorName "Monitor Vendor"
            ModelName "LCD Panel 1024x768"
            HorizSync 31.5 - 48.5
            VertRefresh 40.0 - 70.0
            Option "dpms"
    EndSection

This is default stuff from Anaconda, but you get the idea.

type this into term as root to not attempt loading the floppy modules:
echo "alias floppy off" >> /etc/modules.conf

not sure why or if this is actually causing your notebook to hang, but
there is one easy way to see :)

0 0 1 Real programmers don't document. If it was hard to write,
1 1 1 it should be hard to understand!
