    Examine /var/log/XFree86.0.log

    I found like someone else on the ml there was a problem with the keyboard
    being set to a 105 key one, I changed it to 102

            Option "XkbModel" "pc102"

    and it got further.

    I also needed to run xfs by hand.

    Here is a tip if you are using the nVidia driver, which on my machine does not
    work properly on the virtual terminals (Ctrl-Alt F1, etc).

    At the grub prompt you can type a key (a I think) to append the kernel command
    line. If you add

    linux 3

    here then you will come up in runlevel 3, ie, without X. Then you can use vi
    to change the /etc/X11/XF86Config situation. When you want to try X

    telinint 5

    will try to go to runlevel 5 and start X.
