    The first thing I'd try is to read the man page for your video card
    driver. I had a similar (but not dvi) situation with my Dell C600 and
    video from the port replicator. I had to edit my XF86Config file to get
    it to work. My video driver is "r128" so I read "man r128" and found
    the answer.
