either you've never heard the war stories about compiling mplayer, or your
intestinal fortitude is far greater than most mortals =]

your best bet is to go over to www.freshrpms.net and install their mplayer
    rpm.

    steps you should take:

download and install his apt package

    on the command line, type

    apt-get update
    apt-get install mplayer

and once that's done, you've got mplayer happiness.

also, to search through the packages now available to you, use apt-cache

    apt-cache search [keyword]

so, i want to see what games i can install

    apt-cache search games

also, you may want to install the gui apt client, synaptic

    apt-get install synaptic

there will be a menu option added under system tools after it has completed.

oh, and you can do an

    apt-get update
    apt-get dist-upgrade

and that'll upgrade everything on your system.

Blessed is the man who, having nothing to say, abstains from giving wordy
