    Just to report back on my progress, I followed Alexander's advice and used
    mozex (http://mozex.mozdev.org/). A straight forward install directly
    from the webpage and follow the FAQ for setting the client and it fires
    up mutt perfectly.

    Another brilliant solution from the open source community.
