    Many thanks to:

John Hearns - I'll continue to communicate directly

Duncan Browne - I'll try the above first as I really don't want to spend the time if I can help it.

Alexander Dalloz - thanks for pointing out my error - I downloaded Fedora and not Red Hat. Either way, I can't get it working so I'll shuffle off to a more pedestrian site - clearly, this one is much too sophisticated for yokels like me!

J Ludwig - get your thieving hands off! :)

We have upgraded our hardware. I am endeavouring to recycle all of our
old workstations (500 Mhz Celerons with 64mb RAM) in order to offer
them to colleagues at no cost. Those remaining (and there should be a
few) are due to be given to a local state infants school. I wish to
install Linux and other open-source software on these machines, and
ideally to remove the existing W98 installation and accompanying files.
I have downloaded Linux 9 from Fedora but my attempts to get it running
have so far been a spectacular failure. Any constructive advice,
preferably based on previous experience, would be much appreciated.

Also file a bug report, attaching the file. Get ooo 2.0 developer builds

i've had the same effect, regarding too much dependencies.
Use the src.rpms from simon matter, this works fine. They are also easier to update later.

I see you are posting from a .co.uk
Where are you in the uk?
Can you tell us the nature of the problem with the install?

Any drive will "hang the system" if it has I/O errors. To check try
mounting from the command line < mount /mnt/cdrom > and if there are I/O
errors they will be output to the terminal.
The CD R/W being seen as scsi indicates a 2.4.x kernel and is needed for
    burning.

Can you describe the "SATA2SCSI" hardware RAID a bit more? Is it a
controller card to which you can plug SATA IDE drives and the controller
appears as SCSI to the system? So the controller card certainly needs
driver support. Didn't you ask Starline before buying that hardware
whether it is Linux prepared? What does Starline say is the correct SCSI
kernel driver module for the card?

    Fuzzy,
you definitely need to get more ram for these machines, 64 is usable, but
they're going to be nearly unusable. i recommend putting an additional
128mb module into these machines to bring them up to 192 (or more) or
they're going to be constantly going into the swap file and making the
machine nearly useless (and drastically shortening the lifespan of your
hard drives) you should be able to pick them up for 10 to 15 pounds at a
second-hand computer store (estimated given the exchange rate from us to
uk, the dollar shall rise again! =])
chances are that these machines can only handle 128mb sticks, so avoid
anything larger unless you KNOW it'll work.

    Hi,
if your mail client does not follow/support standards, then you
certainly should think about exchanging it. Or contact the support of
    the programming company.
For serious, your mail header shows up
X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Version 6.1.0.6
as MUA, and I can't say how good or bad that client is in supporting
standards. End of March I did initialize a thread with subject "GPG
signatures and list mail" with quite some responses. the conclusion -
not only by me - was, that it's a client side problem, if it does not
handle signed mails proper. Typically those "problems" arise on
    Windows[tm] platforms.
GPG/PGP signed messages are a feature and no bug ;)

    Michael,
I don't want to be more regal than the pope, but there is no "Linux 9",
else you are from the future. Then welcome back ;)
Linux is at 2.4.26 and 2.6.5 (see http://www.kernel.org/). Linux is the
kernel, the rest are mainly GNU tools and distribution work.
If with "Linux 9" you spoke about Redhat 9, then this is not Fedora. See
the top of the Fedora project site at http://fedora.redhat.com/ where it
clearly states that Fedora is no Redhat Inc supported product.
So it is not that clear to me what you did download: Redhat 9 - which
reaches EOL in 3 days - or Fedora Core 1. With Redhat (9) questions you
would be on the wrong list, while Fedora Core topics are highly
    discussed here.
    Regards
    Alexander

I have implemented an LDAP server for system logins. To create a new
user I create an LDIF file and load it into the LDAP server and then
create the home directory. My question is how do get the home directory
to be created with the default settings for a home directory (bash
    settings and what not). Thx.
