You are also new to ``unix'' I take it.
Add this to your reading list:
The Unix Programming Environment,
Kernighan and Pike, 1984.
It is the single best introduction to the whole ball of wax ... shell,
awk, "C", sed .... that I know of. The sections on "C" are not ANSI
"C" but that can wait.
Once you begin to understand the concepts at the foundations of Unix
lots more will follow (i.e. stuff like stdin, stdout, stderr).
