OK. I think when I tried k3b I had already been using /dev/hdd, but for
cdroast I was using scan devices and it wasn't showing that name for
the DVD drives so I hadn't been using them. I tried again using cdroast
writing to /dev/hdd and still had problems.

I had tried that as part of trying possible solutions to the problem,
but I am not using ide-scsi boot parameters now or for the previous
    sample.

I was able to (apparantly) blank a CDRW disc successfully. But when I tried
writing audio data to the drive things didn't work. Maybe I need to be
using a different mode for something to get things to work with this
    particular type of drive.

Here is the latest cdrecord.out file from the failed attempt:

    Calling: /usr/lib/xcdroast-0.98/bin/xcdrwrap CDRECORD dev= "/dev/hdd" gracetime=2 fs=4096k driveropts=burnfree -v -useinfo speed=4 -dao -eject -pad -audio "/tmp/.CD/track-01.wav" ...
