I got it to work (I was able to install a new feature in Office 2000) by
enabling "Legacy emulation" with the physical drive set to /dev/cdrom
(which is symbolic a link to /dev/hdc). I'd rather not do it that way,
but at least it's working.

I am using the same build and ide0:1 points to /dev/cdrom.
It works fine, the unit is a dvd+rw drive and I have no problem.
I am using FC2 and win98.
It could be a w2k problem with vmware, possibly check vmware website for
possible bugs.
