    Hi!

I'm new here and I have a few questions. First of all what files are
required to install Fedora? Is there a kernel that would allow me to run
Windows XP on top of fedora? And, is there documentation for the
    installation of Fedora yet?

    Thanks a lot!

As for SSH and running the app remotely, you should be able to under
    FC1. You won't under FC2.

    Hello --
My first attempt to install FC2 failed during the installation of packages,
with an error message that a particular package could not be found. I
rebooted, and tested the installation media -- it failed. Stupid me, I
should have done that before. Burned a new CD, tested it -- failed.
Downloaded the ISO again, checked the MD5, burned a new CD, tested it --
failed. Hmmm... Pop the CD in another machine, reboot, test the media --
PASS! Switched out the CD-ROM drives between the two machines, so that the
one that had passed the CD was now in my FC2-ToBe machine. Boot up, test
    media -- fail.
So.....apparently FC2 does not like something about my machine's hardware..?
Have other people experienced similar issues? Are there known issues with
certain types of hardware -- particular hard drives, motherboards, CPUs,
etc. that FC2 is not compatible with? I can post more detailed specs on the
system later if needed (at work now)... There is nothing terribly outdated
about it, and it all worked fine on RH9.0.
Thanks a lot for any help!

In /etc/inittab you should have the following line(s):
    1:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty1
    2:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty1
    ....
The 2nd field there lists the runlevels that mingetty (the login program) should run in. I'm guessing you're missing '5' there.

    Hi
I have the default in inittab to run at 5(GUI mode). It works fine, but
    if I hit CTRL+ALT+F1 I do
not see anything but a black screen. If I set the inittab default to
    runlevel 3,
then I do get to a text login screen, however when I run startx to get to
the GUI I lose the text console.
Does anyone have any thoughts on what I should be doing to fix this ?

You have by default 6 consoles which you can reach from X running by
pressing Strg+Alt+F[1-6] (means function keys 1 to 6). You switch
between the consoles by just Alt+F[1-6] once you left X, still running
    on Alt+F7.
If you use startx then append a & to the end, reads "startx &". This
will keep your console usable though you switch to X mode. Go back to
the startx console, say it is tty1, by using Strg+Alt+F1.
But I would suggest you try to find out whats causing the black screen
when switching from X to console. Do you use a framebuffer console?

Who says you cant in FC2? i do it all the time in FC3 you wont be able to
unless you run ssh -X <host> but you still can do it, the default wont
have X forwarding enabled but you can do it on a case by case basis

Get the 4 ISO image files from any mirror server near you (at least
first 3 CDs) and burn them to CDs. Boot with CD1 and run through
    installation steps.

O, may god prevent that. No is the straight answer. You could run Fedora
and Windows[tm] in dual-boot - for which you will find a lot of
information in the list archive and detailed instructions by a google
search - or you could use a software like VMware to install Windows[tm]
on a virtual PC inside Fedora as a host system.
    > And, is there documentation for the

You can use the installation documentation for Redhat (9 or RHEL3):

I don't have the nice setup that you have, but I can verify that the ATI
binary drivers work with FC2 and X.org. I'd give them a try.
You'll need to install a small patch. Google will quickly reveal the voodoo
needed, or you can contact me directly and I'll email the patch and
    instructions.

Running manually "startx" to get X server running does not change the
runlevel at all from 3 to 5. So that is hardly the cause.

Do you have iptables running or have a firewall in front of your
broadband connection? From the description it sounds like it attempts
to make a connection but then fails. Most likely a firewall issue.

I would like to be able to test some GUI-based applications I'm writing on there, but I don't have any x-server software for the windows PC. My question is, is there any good, free or cheap windows based x-server software available? And also, can I use it over an SSH session?

Check out the cygwin project. You can setup a fairly extensive unix
like environment on windows, including an x server that will handle x11
forwarding for your applications. You can also use their ssh or putty
with the x11 server cygwin provides.

Hello All, I contacted the list yesterday regarding a problem getting my

guess I should face the fact that I am a geek and find something a
little bit more meaty. Has Oprah suggested anything? Thanks Again, Nate --

    Hi Nate and all.
The O'Reilly publications should keep you tied up for a while if it's
geek-speak you are after. Not always the most entertaining but I have a
    few.. heh
Rebel Code by Glyn Moody was a great read for me. Well researched,
entertaining and he had access to many of the major players. He's a
good writer and treated the subject with respect. I suppose to me that
means that he retained some objectivity while celebrating an exciting
period in our history. A good summer read.

I have a broadband connection behind a firewall... however all outgoing
ports are open... and I have no trouble connecting to steam with my
credentials... getting updates/downloads for steam and mods... as well
    as querying servers, etc...
As well it's not just online games I'm having trouble with...

Marcello, I was able to get this to work with FC2 using the supplied
build_rpm script. You must upgrade to a 2.6.6 kernel first -- just use
up2date to get the latest FC2 kernel -- the 2.6.5 kernel does not work
with the Lucent Winmodem driver. build_rpm will create an rpm that you
can then install and it will automatically setup all the proper links and
    module loadings for you.

And use X forwarding with ssh to do that.
