If I were in your position I would see if anything boots from this CD drive.
Knoppix would be an obvious choice, but an old Windows CD would do.
Also, do you have a floppy drive?
If you do, I would get tomsrtbt - Linux on a floppy -
and see if this can see the files on your CD drive.
