    They're all wrong...

    Seriously, "bottom posting" (quote interspersed with new material
    immediately after the text it's commenting on) has always been the rule
    for Usenet news and Internet mailing lists. Some other networks had
    other customs, but mainly this is because Microsoft's Internet e-mail
    clients weren't designed for the Internet.

    It makes life a lot easier, because you can read the quoted material,
    and then immediately get the comment on it. So the comment is placed in
    context.

    The rule is designed to make life easier for readers: a message will be
    written by one person but might be read by thousands. Not that it makes
    life harder for writers with properly designed e-mail clients...
