    Sounds to me as though you have an x-server misconfiguration. If your
    screen is going blank, it is most likely due to the system booting xorg,
    but your screen res or monitor ar emisconfigured and it is not able to
    display the output.

    Boot in single user mode by modifying your kernel boot parameters:

    When displayed the kernel version during boot, hit enter.
    Select the kernel, then hit "e"
    At the end of the kernel statement, add the following: " single"
    (with the space)
    Hit "b" to boot.

    This will boot you to a shell "#:"

     From the command prompt, run: "system-config-display" and feed it good
    info for your hardware (be conservative)
