hda is a whole disk, not a partition. Did you not partition it?

If it exists, it's in /boot/grub/grub.conf.

If you have a separate /boot partition, that will make it
/grub/grub.conf of that partition.

Files are not stored in the MBR.

If you have had filesystem trouble with hdb3 then it's possible that
that partition has some lost files. Have you run fsck on that partition
(not whilst it's mounted).
