OK, I'm a fool! The first time I rebooted it was fine (at least I thought it
was because it worked). I just took your suggestion, rebooted, and it's
gone. I noticed that there is an /etc/fstab~ file in addition to a new
etc/fstab file. In the new /etc/fstab file my 'floppy' entry is gone. It's
still in the backup file if that's what the ~ means.

If HAL (I have no idea what that is) is managing this device and the kernel
support is broken then maybe we should use a simplier entry like:

    /dev/fd0 /media/floppy auto,rw,noauto,user,sync 0 0

This entry was suggested earlier by Peter.

Also, I forgot to mention in my previous post that I too had to create
    the /media/floppy directory.
