Troubleshooting sound issues

Hi, first post to list. Experienced w/ FC, but haven't used it in a while.
:-)

I have a fresh install of FC4, and I'm trying to get sound working.
I don't hear the test sound in sound card configuration.
It says it's detected an Ensoniq ES1371 [Audio PCI-97] with module
snd-ens-1371.
lsmod indicates the module is loaded.
I've read some posts elsewhere concerning 'if using ALSA..." but don't know
if I'm using it.

What can I read to help resolve this issue?
