New CPU or Boat Anchor

List,

I installed an FC4 desktop system on a 500 mh hp pavillion without much
difficulty. After the updates were done and I started tweaking some
user stuff I started having failures with some error reporting on the
terminal screen as the system craters.

If any of you can help me decide to use this PC as a small boat anchor
or to replace the CPU etc I would appreciate your help.
