You have to have the fedora core and extras repositories enabled to supply dependencies for livna - it does not replace the stock libraries.
Installing videolan-client did work, but I'd like to figure out the problem. I don't have fedora-extras repo. I have the ones listed below. I've searched on google and everything says it's in FC4 by default. Don't know what happened to mine. Can you tell me where I can get the repos that are in FC4 by default? Maybe someone could email them to me off-list.
atrpms.repo base.repo freshrpms.repo livna.repo
livna requires extras and won't work without it. Extras is enabled by default in FC4 so you should have it. The fedora-extras.repo file is included in the fedora-release package, so you could try reinstalling that:
# rpm -Uvh --replacefiles --replacepkgs \ http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/4/i386/os/Fedora/RPMS/fedora-release-4-2.noarch.rpm
