Just to be clear, a slave drive is on on the same cable as another
(master) drive. If you have two IDE ports on the interface one isn't a
master and the other slave, it's just two ports.

If a MB has 2 IDE interfaces, they are usually called Primary and
Secondary. If you are playing with older hardware, one thing to be
aware of is that the secondary interface may not support UDMA. This
is especially true of early UDMA-66 MBs. The primary supported
UDMA-66, but the secondary did not - it was intended for CD-ROM
drives. At that time, it was unusual to find CD-ROM drives that
supported UDMA. If I remember correctly, most didn't support DMA
at all...
