I don't think it's a GUI issue because this is still before the kernel
starts. Doesn't matter whether I boot 'linux' or 'linux text'.

But you're right, I should have included my system config:

Motherboard: MSI K7N420 Pro
CPU: Athlon XP
Memory: 256 MB
3ware Escalade 7000-2 RAID controller
2x IBM Deskstar 120GXP 40GB hard drives
Adaptec AIC-7850 SCSI controller
AVM FritzCard PCI 2.0
Matrox Millennium G550 graphics card
Creative Labs CT4810 sound card

Try appending some random text to the kernel command line at the boot
prompt. You may see a warning later, ignore it.

This has hit the list many times, take a look at the archives for more
details.
