Did you try opening it from a terminal? (gnome-system-monitor) I see you
also had an issue with thunderbird, perhaps the problems are related?

Dan,

I don't know what happened but I had to re-install both
gnome-system-monitor and thunderbird, that were working.
I think that something strange is happening connected to latest Yumex
and/or yum, just a shot in the dark.Now it is working.
Look for other messages connected to thunderbird...
