On a mac - I would say "rebuild your desktop" :p

create a new user account and see if it happens there.
If it works in a new user account, then I suspect something
jacked up
your gconf2 database.

Wouldn't it be easier if I just logged on as root and saw if the
problem persisted?

Something that works only as root won't necessarily solve a problem,
such as a Selinux problem for example
