What is with this:

For the last week, my X sessions have been locking up hard, in no
particular place, time or application. It just seizes up and does not
restore itself, even after I have walked off and away for several hours.
It might as well be the Blue Screen of Death. Anyone have a clue towards
this error message? Thanx, Ric
Sounds like an xserver problem, not a gdm problem.

run memtest86
I had similar problems that ended up being a bad cpu. It can also be bad
ram.
memtest86 will help you determine if it is a hardware problem.
