Rebooting the router cured it for me, too. The fact that the LAN was
functioning caused me to overlook that for a while.

I'm wondering if it is possible that the router is being swamped by an
overnight download, so that one box is getting all the bandwidth and nothing
released for the rest. Do you think that's possible?

I doubt it. Routers run software and they just get hosed from time to
time. It can be even more "mysterious" when you have a router/hub combo
and only one port stops functioning.
