display plugged in when I turn on the machine.
Just a bit of background: That 1920 x 1200 display is pushing what DVI
is allowed to do in a single-link DVI. The official limit is 1.65 Ghz
bit-clock on the DVI wires, which was chosen to allow 1600x1200 at a
moderate refresh rate with a bit of breathing room. Stuffing
1920x1200 down that line takes some creative shaving. Some companies
support that resolution over plain old DVI, some don't. (Ironically,
many cards can do much higher resolutions over the analog outputs than
over the digital outputs.)
Does /var/log/Xorg.0.log say anything interesting?

I set it up at 1600X1200 fearing that the system would not be able to
handle anything bigger than that. It didn't work.
I found nothing related to the display in the logs.

I think I saw in an earlier post in this thread that you don't even
see text from the BIOS at bootup time. While I don't know anything
about DVI, I'd think that if the monitor/cable/video card were
working right that you SHOULD see such text.
Given that you don't, you may find it helpful. to back off and do some
experimentation/troubleshooting on the connection. E.G., do both the
computer and monitor have standard 15-pin VGA connectors? If so you
may wish to try them to see if you get text at startup. You may wish
to try a different DVI cable, or a different display with both analog
and DVI cables.
My guess is you'll find something interesting in one or another of
those experiments.
