Default - File select/save GTK dialogs = annoyance

Hello,
For the last few years, I have been poking around for answers on the new GTK dialog issue. (and Firefox bookmarks dialog)
Problem:
It opens in a collapsed fashion and forgets dialog size.
Goal:
Have it open by default so the directory list and the file type open are showing and have the overall dialog window larger
so I don't have to scroll through my drives/bookmarks on the left, etc (always too compact).
Why:
1. I almost never save files in the default location (IE, my home folder)
2. The dialog is usually so small that my bookmarks don't even show up in the list.
3. The file area only lists like 5 1/2 items at a time.
Additional notes:
1. Same goes for Firefox's bookmark dialog, always want it to be expanded.
2. I like the idea of the revamp of the GTK dialogs, but I haven't been able to figure out a way to reconfigure
how they work by default (IE gconf?? /etc? .gtk....?)
3. Posted once or twice in the GTK mailing list, no response.
Thanks in advance
Stephen
