I believe it is complaining about the spaces around the path.

Here's mine:

$ cat /etc/fonts/local.conf
<dir>/usr/local/share/fonts</dir>

I keep stuff like that under /usr/local on a separate partition so I can easily clean-install around it, or use it in a dual-boot setup.
