So, I buy a pair of earphones so that I can continue watching YouTube

See if there's a separate volume control for headphones. You might have
to look for some extra headphone related switches, in the volume control
preferences.

Are you plugging them into a headphone socket? If you plug into a line
socket, there mightn't be enough power to drive a pair of headphones.

Tim, I bet you dollars to donuts that is the problem. If the earbuds
will work in a transistor radio, then that is a line-out jack for an
external amplifier and not a speaker-out. Pascal, get some cheapo
amplified external speakers and plug your earbuds into the jack on the
side. That'll work. It's what I do here.

Pascal's better-half will beat him senseless if he disturbs her sleep.
