Makes one wonder whether simply saying "more codecs may be downloadable
from the player or supporting websites," and listing address(es),
without actually saying anything about any particular ones, avoids the
issue enough.

It would be a rediculous state of affairs if even that wasn't allowed.
Next it'll be forbidden to mention the use of Google to help play some
formats not supported by what you've currently got installed.

It's not as if it's that hard to work out. All you do is Google search
"how to play [bogus-example] files in mplayer" and you get plenty of
results. If some point to the program's own website, you can feel
fairly safe in following the advice or downloading what's offered. I'd
be much more dubious of offerings on some personal website.
