Re: Where Fedora Went Wrong (nice conclusion)

Hopefully. :-)

The merge will help eliminate some work though. Now packages can
freely require any of the packages from the collection. Previously,
Core packages could not depend on anything from Extras.

So sometimes functionality was missing (see the additional build
requirements that gthumb picked up since the merge for just one
example).

In other cases, the functionality could be added but by duplicating
effort. For any example of that, see the python-gpod package. That
could have just been added to the libgpod package, except that it
required the python-eyed3 module, which was in Extras. Sometime in
F7, that will be merged so there will be one less source package to
maintain. That's less work. Yay!

Also, with things merged, more people can help. With KDE for example,
kde-redhat packager Rex Dieter was busy helping out with the KDE
packages almost immediately after the merge was completed. So now
instead of putting the effort into a separate repository, he can put
it into the official packages. That helps reduce duplicated effort
and should mean that KDE gets more love in Fedora.

It's pretty cool to see things getting opened up. It's a hellish
amount of work behind the scenes, and we get to enjoy the benefits for
no cost. That's a damn good deal to me.
